Purpose:
This unit serves FAB, OFAB and ZAB (large calibre) detonation on hitting their target.
Specifications:
Impact-actuated, universal (for nose or base installation), thermo-pneumatic (activated by heat generated through the rapid compression
of air within the fuse body cavity), with instantaneous action upon impact (0 s delay) or a 0.2 s delay.
Main Components:
The body of the fuse (11) with a stem of 36 mm in diameter,
Locking mechanism: propeller (1) with a cap and three segments,
Impact mechanism: sleeve (2) with an insert in which nitrocellulose cotton wool is stored, impact pin (3), piston (5) with powder pellets (10)
and a striker spring,
Delay mechanism: a time-delay charge (4) housed in the piston and an adjustment screw (9),
Detonator: booster charge, blasting cap (6), two initiating charges (8) made of tetryl, detonator casing (7).
Operation:
After the live bomb is released and the arming vane (1) spins off and separates, three safety segments fall away, thereby unlocking the sleeve (2)
and, consequently, the striker (3) with its piston (5). In nose-fused types, the movement of the sleeve is governed by the resistance of the target
material. In tail-fused types (which requires rotation of the vane blades), the sleeve‘s movement is controlled by the striker, which is guided by
two pins. As the sleeve moves, the piston compresses the air, heating it up and igniting the nitrocellulose wadding. This ignites the propellant
pellets (10) inside the piston. If the adjustment screw (9) is screwed in, the booster charge is initiated only after the delay material burns through
(a 0.2-second delay). If the screw is unscrewed to be flush with the body, the booster charge is initiated immediately. This initiates the detonator (6)
and subsequently the initiating charge (8), housed in the detonator casing (7), which results in the detonation to the bomb‘s main explosive charge.
