Fig.10 Installation of the APUV-1 aerial bomb fuse in the nose of the
bomb. The arming vane is prevented from arming until released by
means of the UV vane control mechanism, which features a locking
fork and washer. This mechanism is connected via the UVPI arming
wire (with its ring) to the MVN ‘live/safe’ mechanism located in
the aircraft‘s bomb rack. If the bomb is released in live mode, the
assembly comprising the MVN, ring, UVPI arming wire, and locking
fork remain attached to the bomb rack; the fuse vane is unlocked, and
the airflow causes it to unscrew and detach, thereby preparing the
bomb for detonation upon impact. If the bomb is released in safe mode,
the ring on the arming wire is released from the MVN mechanism, and
the bomb falls to the ground in a secured state.
Fig.11 APUV-1 aerial bomb fuse with MDV-1 arming device. Later, fuses were fitted to bombs in
conjunction with these arming devices, which mechanically prevented the fuse‘s vanes from
unscrewing and releasing for a period of 10 ± 1 seconds after bomb release. During live bombing
missions, the suspension loop on the arming device is pulled out by the snap hook of the UVPI
bomb wire. Spring pressure drives the firing pin, tipped with a needle, against the primer, initiating
the ignition and delay phases. Once these burn out, an ejector primer is initiated. This shears the
MDV sleeve at its weakest point and ejects the MDV pin from the mounting washer. This action
unlocks the vane blades, allowing them to begin rotating. This measure enhanced the safety of the
delivery aircraft itself.
The AV-1D/U Fuse
