FIGHTER PILOT’S
EQUIPMENT
The P-51 pilots’ ying gear was largely specied by regulations, yet it varied greatly
on an individual basis. Functionally, the gear was adapted to the specic conditions of
missions lasting many hours and the environment in which the pilots operated. Over
time, it was supplemented with additional items such as the F-2/F-3 heated ight suit
and, starting in the summer of 1944, G-3 anti-G trousers or heavy, warm A-6 boots.
The list of equipment types provided here is only partial. Pilots of the 8th AF also
liked to use British-made goggles, gloves, or even ight helmets intended for the RAF
on an individual basis. The example shown here illustrates the most common variant
of the suit and equipment for an American ghter pilot in the ETO in 1944.
