The Mustang with which Charles E. ‘Chuck’ Yea-
ger — who would later become a famous American re-
cord-breaking pilot (holding the rank of F/O in early
1944 and before retiring of a brigadier general) — be-
gan his combat career with the 357th Fighter Group,
was a B-5-NA variant. Yeager named the aircraft after
his ancée, Glennis Faye Dickhouse. The spelling of the
inscription diered from that on Yeager’s later aircraft.
It is unclear whether this was intentional on the pilot’s
part or a mistake by the mechanic who painted the in-
scription. What is certain is that Yeager ew fewer than
nine combat missions in this aircraft. During his eighth
mission, he shot down a Bf 109. The following day, he
was shot down himself during a mission over France.
Yeager bailed out of the aircraft, which crashed in the
Gironde region.

Although American pilot Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager is
not primarily known to the general public as a World War
II ghter pilot, his participation in the ghting in Europe
is quite fascinating.
He was born on February 13, 1923, in Myra, WV, and
was drafted into the army on September 12, 1941. After
technical and military training, he served as a mechan-
ic with a training unit. However, he was more drawn to
being a pilot than to maintaining aircraft on the ground.
Shortly thereafter, he applied for pilot training, where
he was accepted in July 1942. He completed various
phases of training at bases in Hemet, CA; Gardner Field,
Taft, CA; and Luke Field, AZ, where he earned his pilot’s
wings on March 10, 1943.
With the rank of F/O, he joined the 363rd FS, which
was part of the newly forming 357th FG. There he
trained for combat in the P-39. On October 23, 1943,
during a practice attack on a formation of Liberators, he
had to use his parachute for the rst time to save him-
self. The engine of his Airacobra exploded, and the air-
craft burst into ames.
When the 357th FG moved to England in November
1943, it re-equipped with P-51Bs. From
late November 1943 to late January
