JN755, No. 3 Squadron, Newchurch, Great Britain, May 1944
Part of 3 Sqn’s initial equipment, JN755 served throughout the summer of 1944 campaign, coded ‘QO-D’ until 4 June 1944 when the squadron codes
were changed to ‘JF’. It was most often flown by Flg Off R.E.’Bob’ Barckley who, on the night of 8/9 May 1944, pursued and possibly destroyed a fast-moving bright light at 3,000 feet, south of Le Havre. This may have been the Tempest’s first flying bomb destroyed, as test flights V-1 were taking place
at this time. He was flying JN755.
Later, Barckley was credited with the destruction of 13 V-1s (one shared) during the summer campaign but in September JN755 was taken out of service
for repairs and refurbishment. After a short period in store JN755 was issued to 287 Sqn and flew with that unit for over a year, until withdrawn from
use in July 1946; it was scrapped 3 months later.
