eduard4Info Eduard - January 2012EDITORIALAs suspected...the new year is upon us! I wassure this time last year that it would be, andin quick order, too. With it comes the almostobligatory looking back, which I am not so sureis always a good idea. But, here it is. 2011sure had its downs, with combinations of naturaldisasters, political turbulence and economicinstability. Many things point towards a justiedpessimism, but there have been things to reporton that push 2011 into being a sort of a catalystfor good things to come in our hobby. Certainly,our MiG-21MF and SMT brought a ray ofsunshine into many modelers’ lives, and in twoscales to boot. The 1/72nd scale Hellcat is upthere in terms of quality in that scale, and pointsto good things yet to come in the near future. Iam happy to report that we will be ringing innew kits in the two smaller scales. What was notreleased as hoped and predicted last January,will be released in very short order with our Bf109E in 48th scale in February, the Bf 110Ein 72nd scale in the summer, some small scalesurprises in September for E-day, and a big shotof good stuff next Christmas.... assuming there isa Christmas next year.....You can nd more about our expectedproducts in this newsletter, but what is alsoimportant to know, is how to contact us. So,rst, try our web site, which has developed intothe best source for learning of our ideas andactivities. Then, you can meet us personallyat many fairs and shows. First, we will be atNurnberg like every year, and the rst modelconvention we visit will be Panthers Cup in Prosekin Prague in March. Then, we traditionally attendMosonmagyarovar in Hungary in April. Wecan´t miss the IPMS Nationals in August, andwe close out the tour year in September withour E-day. E-day 2011 was a very nice event,although it was held one day only. We foundthe one day format too short, certainly a littlebit too hectic for us, and we decided to revertback to the two, respectively three, day model.We decided to improve on the Czech nationalholiday on the 28th of September, and openthe convention on Thursday, September 27 inthe late afternoon, with the main day of theconvention being Friday September 28th. Theconvention then ends on Saturday, September29th, at 3 p.m.. Actually, it takes its inspirationfor this timing from the US convention, E-day isjust one day shorter. I am anxious to see howthis new timing format will work in the middleof Europe. Besides the timing, we will alsorevamp the organization of the Eduard booth,and also the organization of the interaction withall visitors, our customers, our fans, and thoseof you who are simply interested enough tocome on by. The idea is that competent people,who understand our design and manufacturingprocesses, as well as marketing operations, willanswer your question immediately in the bootharea. It doesn´t mean that the traditional kettleof discussion will be cancelled – of course not. It,too, will be improved with a better location andimproved sound. E-day will be simply great, andthere is still no mention of the entry kit! I will nottell you which kit the entry kit will be, but I canhint, can’t I? – so, it will be small, but neverthelessa great, scaled down quarter scale kit plannedfor the second quarter of 2013, which will beintroduced at E-day, too. Well, I hope that helps:-)A very important change is expected with ourweb site. There will be some smaller improvementafter the new year, but I expect a more generaland very signicant change later this year. I stilldon´t know the complete extent of the change,but I´m sure it will bring great feedback!So, enough small talk. I know most inertestcentres around our future plans, and so here theyare! eduard14Info Eduard - January 2012A WORD FROM THE DESIGNERP-61A Black Widow 1/48eduard14Info Eduard - January 2012The January list of new items is not without sets covering the signicant new releaseby China’s Great Wall Hobby. The kit was well received in the modeling communityon the internet and by the paper media alike. As with all popular kits, we felt incli-ned to cover this Black Widow with the development of photoetched sets.The process typically begins with the collection of all available reference material,and comparing the kit moldings to them. Then, the decisions are made as to whatcomponents would be well represented in brass when compared to the plastic.Special kudos in this process must go out to my colleague Karel Krejci.The castings of the Great Wall kit were also, and inevitably I suppose, comparedto the comparatively ancient Monogram kit, and we drew one signicant conclusi-on. The Chinese kit designers allowed themselves to be greatly inuenced by theolder kit. They certainly succeeded in offering a kit that utilizes current technologiesand standards, but they ignored a list of vices, too. Typically, we separate sets intointerior and exterior categories. With that, we try to offer the modeler a morespecic choice of what they want to improve upon, and what their experiencesmay dictate. This same principle was applied in the development of the P-61A sets,going a bit further in also offering undercarriage sets, and separating the cockpitsinto front and rear. This arrangement also promoted the expansion of parts.The Black Widow is a very visible airplane, in terms of the interior and the amountof glass. The kit pilot cockpit is some 5mm longer than it should be. Also, the for-ward part of the nose well is missing, a component of the front cockpit. We decidedthat this could be well represented as a photoetched piece. We had to shorten theside consoles to correspond to the plastice parts.The P-61A typically ew minus the upper gun turret, which reduced the crew fromthree to two. For this reason, I recommend not gluing the gunner’s seat in the coc-kpit. These gunners did not y in the vast majority of cases, nor were they expectedto in the future. The seat then becomes redundant.The operator’s cockpit needed a general redoing in terms of electronic equipment.The plastic parts offer up a strange mix, which, for example, uses a radio compassLORAN 9, which wasn’t used until 1945! So, the photoetched components offerequipment consistent with the 1943 standard.I wanted to design the undercarriage set to rst and foremost improve the wells.These are very ‘plastic’ in the kit, and not entirely accurate. A part of the nose wellare steps with a crawlway that allowed the pilot (and gunner as needed) accessto the cockpit. This is also represented in the photoetched set, and should makeit worthwhile to open it all up. The nal thing I wanted to pay some attention towas the ailerons. The Chinese manufacturer provides only a smooth surface, andfurthermore did not study sufciently its use and shape.Test tting of all of the brass into the kit was very satisfactory. It is po-ssible to install this bomb under all versions of the MiG-21, mainly underthe MiG-21MF and SMT.A pair of RS-2US air to air rockets ontheir service cart. I noted instantly the cur-ved prole, and the aggressive elegance of thebird, and I was impressed. Along with the MiG-29, this was the Soviet fourth generation ghter.Stated admittedly in an extremely oversimpli-ed manner, the United States’ XB-70 Valkyrieprogram scared the Soviets into developingthe MiG-25, which in turn scared the Americansinto developing the F-15. Maintaining the tit fortat pattern, the Soviets recognized the need todevelop a PVO and VVS ghter that would beable to meet and greet any western opponentin the foreseeable future. The American FX pro-gram, which led to the McDonnell Douglas F-15,was studied intently by the Soviets.An intuitive need for such a development in theSoviet Union was recognized, and some earlystudy work was already carried out by the de-sign bureaus on their own initiative prior to theissuing of the ofcial ‘PFI’ (Prospective TacticalFighter) project specs. The rst layout propo-sals were sketched out in 1969/70, under theSukhoi factory designation T10 (not to be con-fused with the later T10 prototypes), and the stillsecret Air Force designation Su-27. The initialdesign concept represented a departure fromthe normal conservatism often present in Sovietdevelopment circles, and the blended body wasto ensure considerable effectiveness in terms oflift and internal fuel capacity. The design alsofeatured prominent LERX (leading edge root ex-tensions) to generate vortices that intensied asthe AoA (angle of attack) increased, to the pointwhere sub-vortex depressions generated grea-ter lift from beneath the wing. It was a carefullydetailed design. The type was also to featurepitch only FBW (y by wire) for the rst timein a Soviet ghter, and the system was alreadybeing developed in the T-4 prototype. The FBWsystem was signicant, because it allowed theintegration of longitudinal instability into the de-sign, making the aircraft potentially much moremaneuverable. The horizontal stabilizers weredesigned to augment the blended body andwing lift generated by their upward deection,raising maneuverability to unprecedented levels.The Central Aero and Hydrodynamics Institute,or TsAGI, strictly urged a much less innovativeapproach, due in large part to its aforementi-oned conservatism and from interpretation ofresearch data abroad, notably of the F-15. Thisled to a second T10 concept (again, not be con-fused with the actual T10 prototypes) to be de-veloped in the form of a layout lacking the blen-ded wing concept, among other innovations thatwere also dropped. It was decided to go intowind tunnel testing with both ideas represented,as it was deemed relevant to test them againsteach other. The result was that the conservatismwas badly misplaced. A large number of windtunnel models were used to analyze severalblended body, wing, landing gear and enginenacelle congurations.Using what was known of the F-15 as a ben-chmark, the Air Force issued requirements the PFIwas to fulll. Specs included a top speed M2.35to M2.5, a climb rate up to 350m/sec, a servi-ce ceiling of 22,000m, range at high altitude of2500km, and g-limits of -8 to +9g. It was toperform a wide range of mission proles, ran-ging, among others, from recon to point defenseto escort and to effectively threaten any westerntype to be elded simultaneously.As well as the carefully designed aerodynamicinnovations introduced, a fourth generation en-gine was developed. It would give the Su-27a thrust to weight ratio of greater than 1.The T10 program was constantly nagged by theweight restrictions that were imposed on it by theaerodynamics. Not that the aerodynamics wereawed, by any stretch, but crossing the weightlimits would degrade the advantages that wereoffered by them. The weight was kept down bythe use of titanium alloys and advanced con-struction methods, although composite materialsPage 20

It was deemed justas effective to go with the titanium alloy – con-struction technique route.Conceptual studies were nalized in 1975,and authorization was given to produce shopdrawings, and initiate prototype production.The rst two prototypes were the T10-1 andT10-2 (not to be confused with the samedesignations used in the conceptual stages).These were true to the initial concept, exceptheavier and larger. The aircraft powerwas to be supplied by longtime Sukhoipartner Saturn in the form of the AL-31F, whichwas in development for eleven years. It was tobe designed with compatible goals in terms ofrange (ie. be very fuel efcient). In any case,the AL-31F wasn’t ready for installation whenthe T10-1 was ready to accept it, and so therst T-10s were powered by the AL-21F thatalso powered the Su-22 and Su-24. In the end,the AL-31F offers signicant advantages overthe American F100 and F110 engines poweringthe F-15 and F-16 series in terms of efciency,thrust and service life.Based on the specs issued by the defense mini-stry, a new avionics t and armaments systemwas developed. This would include multimodecapability with ECM resistance and look up/lookdown target acquisition and tracking. A closecombat IRST (InfraRed Search and Track) systemwas developed as well. As with the F-14, the air-craft was initially seen as a pure interceptor, buthad a bomb delivery capability built-in from thestart.The T10-1 was completed in early 1977 andwas delivered to the Zhukovsky based LII FlightResearch Centre. American surveillance photo-graphs placed the aircraft at Ramenskoye, andmisnamed it the ‘RAM-K’. As mentioned previous-ly, the bird was powered with the AL-21F engine,and so had certain intake and nacelle featuresnot found in later aircraft tted with the AL-31F.The aircraft powered by the older engine wereused for stability and aerodynamic vericationtesting. This was deemed much preferable towaiting for the intended engine, and allowedmuch of the testing to be conducted immediately.The T10-1chief test pilot was Maj.Gen. VladimirIlyushin, and the rst ight took place May 20th,1977. The T10-0 was developed in conjunctionfor static testing.It was clear early on that the T10-1 was awed,but the Sukhoi OKB deemed it advantageousto nish the ight testing ‘as is’ prior to a rede-sign to create a reference point for comparison.Problems with lateral stability needed attentionwithout affecting the vortices generated thatwould degrade the designs ability to generatedlift. The initial testing phase looked at the blen-ded wing design and performance, followed bytesting the FBW and armament control systems.The T10-1 carried out no missile ring tests, butdid carry two missiles under each wing, and twounder the fuselage as part of the aerodynamicstudy.The T10-1 was joined by the T10-2 in early1978. It was coded ‘210’, and was very similarto the T10-1. The rst ight was on May 16th,1978, but the aircraft crashed on July 7th, killingthe T10-2 project test pilot Yevgeniy Solovy-ov. This was attributed to unexpected behaviorof the aircraft, for which the pilot over com-pensated and subsequently overstressed theaircraft.The next prototypes to be delivered were theT10-3 and -4, and were the rst to be poweredby the AL-31F. The engine is smaller than theAL-21F, and this required the redesign of theintakes and nacelles. Progressive avionic installa-tion and committing cooling air for turbine bladecooling from the compressor caused a shift in thecentre of gravity and an increase in specic fuelconsumption respectively. Furthermore, detailedcalculations indicated that the Su-27 aerody-namics, as they were, were inferior to the F-15,and that a total redesign was, in fact, in order.Also, the avionics failed to meet weight require-ments (part of that ever present nagging weightthing), and the engine specic fuel consumptionwas also unacceptable. This was recognized bySukhoi, MAP and the VVS alike, and nothing wasleft without scrutiny. All simple solutions, such asmoving the centre of gravity, were rejected ifthey came at the expense of instability, and, byextension, maneuverability. Studies had shownthat once the horizontal stabilizer AoA excee-ded that of the wing (a combination that wasMaj.Gen. Vladimir Ilyushi, test pilotPrototype evolutionPage 21

This was a si-milar problem that was encountered by GeneralDynamics in the F-16, but the GD solution was tosimply limit AoA to 25o. It was suggested by theSiberian Research Institute (SibNIA) to increasewing area aft of the centre of gravity. The apsand ailerons were replaced by aperons, anda leading edge ap was added.There were factors that worked in favor of theredesign process, such as an almost unpreceden-ted willingness of Project Chief Simonov’s wi-llingness to co-operate directly with SibNIA, hel-peing to smooth out and accelerate the process.Moving the vertical tail surfaces further apartso that they rested outboard of the engines wasused not only to give access to the engine acce-ssories, which now were mounted on top of theengine rather than on the bottom, but also tomaintain control of the aircraft in crosswind situa-tions. Crosswind aerodynamic turbulence comingoff the windward wing degraded the windwardtail performance, but the arrangement meantthat the leeward tail was unaffected and main-tained effect on control. Air intakes needed notto be changed, but they were made slimmer,another advantage of moving the AL-31F engi-ne accessories to the top of the engine.The original landing gear doors doubled as spe-ed brakes on the original T10 prototypes, muchlike the Su-24, and this caused severe buffetingacross the tail surfaces, and so this arrangementwas dropped. A new speed brake was mountedon top of the fuselage, much the same as it wason the F-15. The nosegear was moved aft byover 3m, and as such, carried a greater load,and so was accordingly strengthened.All of these changes incorporated led to the newdesignation T10S. The blended wing was redu-ced by some 15%, leading to a drop in superso-nic drag by up to 20%,The rst T10S prototype was the T10-7, andtook to the sky for the rst time on April 20th,1981. It did not carry avionics or armament,as it was used to verify the aerodynamic con-cepts. It crashed on September 3rd.The T10-12 was delivered n March, 1981, andrst ew on November 27, 1981, but its careerwas also short lived, crashing on December23rd, killing the test pilot Alexandr S. Koma-rov. It broke up at high speed and altitude, andlogged only 5 ½ hours of ight time.Several more T-10 prototypes joined theacceptance trials. The T10-15, -17, -18, -19,-20, -21, -22, -23 and -27 did not follow theproduction sequence. The rst T10S built to fullproduction standard was the T10-17, and itrst ew on May 26th, 1982, own by A Isakor.This aircaft bore the brunt of the testing pro-gram and also carried out live re tests.T10 accidents continued. A T10-17 wing pa-nel came off, striking the vertical tail surface, buttest pilot Nikolai Sudovnikov was able to skillfullybring the bird home minus a part of the wingand half a vertical n, allowing a full analysis tobe made. On May 25th, 1984, T10-21 crashedafter another structural failure, and test pilot V.I.Loychikov ejected safely.These crashes led to further modications and re-nements. The T10-15 was modied to becomethe P-42 record breaking aircraft. The tests weregenerally completed in 1985, and the aircraftattained IOC in the summer of that year.Several other T10s were built and tested, evenafter the completion of the state acceptance tri-als.(continue)HISTORYPage 22

The MiG-21 surface panelset gives a nice opportunity to make the surfaceof the model more plastic. It wasn´t commonin the past to release a PE set for our premiererelease in the same month with the basic kit. Thisis probably the rst time it has happened, whichmakes us proud and happy.
