  Dear Friends,

  We have behind us a month chock full

  of Spiires, and you are probably ex-

  pecng me to write about nothing but

  – micro details about hydraulic pumps,

  the colour of leering, and whatever

  else has been beaten to almost death

  recently. But, I won’t. The internet fo-

  rums can take care of that very well

  on its own. This is a me for Messer-

  schmis, because without Messer-

  schmis, Spiires would be very lile.

  This is the reason why we have brushed

  o the Emils in both 48th and 32nd sca-

  les. This is to create the correct atmo-

  sphere to help us commemorate what

  really went on in the skies over England

  eighty years ago. It’s about civilizaon

  and about good being victorious over

  evil, that much is clear, but it is about

  more than that. Turning to the human

  perspecve, it’s also about people,

  technology, will, character, luck and, in

  the end, life and death. These things

  were on both sides, somewhat surpri-

  singly, similar, although also somewhat

  out of synch in terms of metables.

  This may be used to explain why, when

  all was said and done, former enemies

  had a high level of understanding for

  one another. And so we decided to re-

  lease our good ol’ Emil one more me,

  conceptually consistent with the recent

  release of its fateful opponent, the Spit-

  re. Because the theme on which we

  are currently focused is wideranging

  and me is ying by, we decided to risk

  it and release the Emil in two scales

  at the same me, with the same mar-

  kings in both kits. The 1:48th scale kit

  is a Dual Combo boxing while the 32nd

  scale item is a classic single kit. Both kits

  oer the same mix of E-1, E-3 and E-4

  versions, including ghter-bomber sub

  variants, all markings opons are new

  and don’t draw on opons that we have

  used in past releases. They cover all of

  the signicant Jagdgeschwader units

  that were pressed into service by the

  Luwae in the Bale of Britain. It’s

  a good mix of well known aces, lesser

  known aces, and your normal run of

  the mill service pilots. The aircra and

  pilots cover various phases of the Bale

  of Britain, and represent the evoluon

  of camouage schemes throughout it,

  and also the evoluon of the Luwa-

  e’s taccs. The main ace represented

  is Adolf Galland, but the marking opon

  for it is one that we have not oered in

  any past releases. As far as the big guns

  are concerned, we have two decal she-

  ets ready to go in each scale. One sheet

  is dubbed Adlerangri Experten, and

  the other is called Adlerangri Alte Ha-

  sen. The big aces will be covered there,

  and there will be ten of them. The 48th

  scale sheets will be out in October, fo-

  llowed in November by the 32nd scale

  sheets. The Adlerangri is the common

  component in the names of the kits, and

  the reasoning for this is described in the

  Jan Bobek arcle in this newsleer.

  We will make a return to the Spiire in

  October with the release of the Spiire

  Mk.Ia as a ProPACK kit. It will include

  an uncommon total of seven marking

  opons, that will take you through the

  development of Spiire markings and

  schemes from the spring of 1940 to the

  summer of 1941. If you are sll among

  those who have this version of the air-

  plane as somewhat boring, this kit will

  lead you away from that mistaken im-

  pression. This kit‘s release will be the

  rst of several events we are planning

  as a compensaon for the cancella-

  on of this year’s E-day. It will be called

  SPITFIRE DAY, and it will be held at the

  airport at Pilsen-Line on September 19.

  That’s the home of a Spiire Mk.XVI,

  but I don’t think that’s a big issue. The

  Spiire is worth seeing in any of its ver-

  sions, and there is a lot more to see at

  Line, too. The event will be realized in

  conjuncon with the Classic Trainers

  Club, and besides the Spiire, there will

  be a Texan, and a Tiger Moth, among

  other items in the Club’s collecon. The-

  re is also a small, local museum. We will

  bring kits, and besides the Spiire, the

  Limited Edion Cmelak in 1:72nd scale

  and the 1:48th scale MiG-19, there will

  be T-shirts associated with them. Admi-

  ssion ckets will be available on our e-

  -shop, and their number will be limited,

  so those should be goen sooner rather

  than later. Pre-orders will be taken from

  the laer half of this week.

  We will bapze the Spire with cham-

  pagne in Line, and the Cmelak with

  mead a week later in Jicin, on Septem-

  ber 26th, the originally planned date for

  E-day. There will be some ight displays

  here as well, and you will be able to get

  up close and personal with stac displa-

  ys, most notably with the Cmelak (pro-

  nounced ‘Chmelak’ and means ‘Bumble

  Bee’ in Czech), as well as other aircra,

  talk to the pilot, and we will have our

  new releases for October which will be

  available for purchase. There will be

  one more event before this day, and it

  will be in the spirit of the Pot Q and A,

  and this will take place in Prague’s Ho-

  lesovice Café called Vnitroblock. It will

  be an extrapolaon of the meeng at

  Artur in July, and will take the place of

  the cancelled Q and A session slated

  for E-day. It will concern itself mostly

  with new items that are being planned,

  not just for October, but for the rema-

  inder of the year. So, there will be talk

  of the F-6D Mustang, and the Aldertag

  Limited Edions which will focus on the

  Bf 110C/D in the Bale of Britain in

  both 1:72nd and 1:48th scales, the Spit-

  re Mk.II and the ProPACK Cmelak.

  Among others, of course….much is be-

  ing planned. Here, the admission ckets

  will also be in limited quanes, so he-

  sitaon is not a good idea.

  Our new decal sheets are making their

  way around the modelling world, too.

  Much conversaon revolves around, as

  it is with new things as a general rule,

  what is wrong with them, and above all,

  with the peeling of the clear coat. The-

  re have been instances in August where

  there was damage done to the sheets

  during producon, which has fueled

  a certain level of paranoia towards

  them. Those instances have been tra-

  ced to the high temperatures that have

  melted the wax on the protecve pa-

  per and damaged the decal. We were

  able to simulate this condion, and it

  occurs at temperatures of over 50 de-

  grees Celsius, and these temperatures

  can be achieved under certain condi-

  ons of storage. There is no shortage of

  the possibility of these condions over

  the summer months. The decals them-

  selves are not a new idea by any me-

  ans, but the method of prinng these

  is, although there is no connecon be-

  tween that and their behavior. In the

  summer, we increased the thickness

  of the carrier lm, because there were

  complaints from our customers that

  the decals were too thin, and dicult

  to handle as a result. The thicker decals

  are easier to handle, but there sll ne-

  eds to be a certain amount of respect

  used in approaching them, same as with

  any decals. Decals are very unforgiving

  when it comes to poor workmanship,

  and their applicaon always demands

  a certain level of care, and a good level

  of experience helps, too. In our kits, the

  number of opons with the decals has

  oen oered more than ve opportu-

  nies to get used to using them for any

  given model. There is always something

  with which to hone one’s skills with.

  Pracce makes perfect. Ask any pilot.

  So, pracce. Repeon is the mother

  of wisdom. It is a similar thing with the

  possibility of the clear peeling. It is gene-

  rally known that it can be done with our

  decals, and there has been much discu-

  ssion about it on the internet, mostly

  revolving around there not being any

  menon of it in instrucons. This is not

  menoned, because although it can,

  in fact, be done, it is not a mandatory

  procedure for their use. If you choose

  to leave the clear carrier on them, and

  then clear coat over them in the tradi-

  onal way, you’ll have no problem. The

  carrier is a lile thicker than it used to

  be, but is sll thin enough to look rea-

  lly good on the model and adheres well

  to its surface. Peeling o the carrier is

  not really a complicated maer, any-

  way, but as with everything else, it does

  benet from pracce. So, if you are

  among those that desire to remove the

  lm from their decals, then you have an

  opportunity to educate yourself on the

  procedure on decals you do not intend

  to otherwise take advantage of. Prac-

  ce, experiment, and evolve. It’s actually

  an enjoyable thing to do. But bear in

  mind that the decision to either peel

  o, or keep, the clear lm is ulmate-

  ly for you to decide. In order to make

  it a bit easier on you, we will prepare

  a small tutorial for October’s newsle-

  er, outlining the do’s and don’ts with

  respect to using our decals and focusing

  on the two methods. And I will venture

  to say that once you get the necessary

  experience, you will demand no other

  type of decal!

  At the end of August, the fund rai-

  ser for Vaclav Sorel came to an end.

  For those of you who do not know the

  gentleman, he made himself very well

  known to Czech and Slovak modelers

  and aviaon enthusiasts in the seven-

  es and eighes by way of magazine

  publicaons, who has recently encoun-

  tered serious health obstacles. In all, we

  were able to raise some 700,000 Czech

  Crowns, which I consider a respectable

  sum. Thanks to all of you who have con-

  tributed to this eort and, as such, has

  contributed to his healing. It had a di-

  rect and posive impact on his mental

  state, and consequently, his recupera-

  on. We will connue to work to make

  his recovery as quick as possible. With

  our colleagues at Special Hobby, we

  have prepared a nostalgia-based kit ba-

  sed on Vaclav’s monographs on the Cur-

  ss P-40L Warhawk, own at the end of

  the war by Ulehla. This is another of the

  items that were planned for E-day, and

  aer the cancellaon of the event, but

  will now alternavely be released at the

  event inline, Jicin and Holesovice, whe-

  re the kit will be for sale. Also, it will be

  available through the e-shops of Eduard

  and Special Hobby.

  OPERACE DYNAMO

  This airplane was manufactured by WNF in early autumn 1939 and assigned to I./JG 77 led by Hptm. Johannes Janke. Before beginning of

  World War Two his unit was relocated very oen. It is no wonder, then, that members of I./JG 77 ironically dubbed themselves ‘Wanderzir-

  kus Janke’ (Janke’s Travelling Circus), and expressed their feelings resulng from constant relocaon through their unit symbol, a discarded

  shoe. Janke´s Adjutant Lt. Kunze used earlier a Bf 109 E-1 with name „Sepp“ under the cockpit. But for his new Bf 109 E-3 featured in this

  plasc kit he adopted lile rabbit with name „Kieki“ and lile spear. Camouage consist of RLM 71, 02 and 65. Berlin nave Kunze born in

  1918 achieved two victories in September 1940 and was promoted to rank of Oberleutnant. He was shot down and killed in combat with

  Spiires of No. 603 Squadron on September 14th, 1940 near Lympne in Bf 109 E-4 WNr. 3759 „<+“. He was buried two days later at Haw-

  kinge cemetery.

  OPERACE DYNAMO

  Machold´s personal mount was manufactured by WNF in April 1940. Camouage consist of RLM 71, 02 and 65. Red „R“ in the shield is lin-

  ked to unit´s bale name „Richthofen“ obviously in memory of legendary „Red Baron“. The dog emblem was designed by Staelkapitän Oo

  Betram in 1939. At the beginning of World War Two, Machold was serving with 1./JG 2. He was very successful in Bale of France gaining 10

  victories, including three Hurricanes and one Spiire. His 11th victory was „Tomahawk“ claimed on August 11th around noon near Portland.

  Oberfeldwebel Machold connued to gain victories during the Bale of Britain. He was the eighth German ghter pilot to achieve 20 victo-

  ries. On September 5th, 1940, he was awarded the Knight Cross for 21 victories. On September 7th, Machold was transferred to

  9./JG 2. He recorded his 24th through 26th victories on September 30th, shoong down three Spiires. Oberleutnant Machold was appo-

  inted Staelkapitän of 7./JG 2 in spring 1941. On June 9th, 1941 during a low-level Jabo aack on a shipping convoy o Portland his Bf 109

  E-7/Z (WNr. 5983) “White 15” receiving damage from an-aircra re from a Royal Navy destroyer. Machold force-landed near Swanage,

  Dorset and became prisoner of war. Werner Machold claimed 32 victories in more than 250 combat missions. All his victories were recorded

  over the Western front.

  DER KANALKAMPF

  This airplane was manufactured by Arado in late summer or early spring of 1939. Camouage consist of RLM 71, 02 and 65. Hans Krug was

  born in 1899 and in Great War served in various Bavarian aviaon units being in combat duty from March ll May 1918. Considered rather

  old for ghter pilot he joined as a volunteer the Spanish naonalist air force, not Legion Condor like other German „volunteers“. He oen

  ew alongside Fiat CR.32 of Spanish ace Joaquin Garcia Morato, whose aircra carried bullghng moo „VISTA SUERTE Y AL TORO“ (The

  look, good fortune and forward). Krug adopted inscripon on his „Emil“. He is probably idencal with Heinkel He 51 pilot „Johann Krug“ who

  claimed Potez on December 27th, 1936 over Teruel. On February 16th, 1937 he suered mid-air collision with Naonalist pilot F. Boll Dedo-

  feu (KIA) and on August 14th, 1938 his He 51 was damaged in combat. Krug was nally accepted to Luwae and entered successful service

  with II./JG 26 „Schlageter“ with rank of Leutnant. He scored with 5./JG 26 ve victories during French campaign including one unconrmed

  (but marked on his tail).Emblem of 5. Stael was popular comics raven „Hans Huckebein der Rabe“. Originally used by ghter unit of Legion

  Condor, the raven was adopted by 5./JG 26 in 1939. During Bale of Britain Krug scored addional ve victories and took over leadership of

  4./JG 26. On September 7th in the evening he was shot down by RAF ghters over England and performed belly landing near Pluckley. His

  name is somemes confused with bomber pilot Lt. Peter Krug who escaped from prison camp in Canada to USA. He is the only veteran from

  the First World War who achieved the status of an ace during the Second World War.

  DER KANALKAMPF

  This „Emil“ was manufactured by Messerschmi GmbH in July 1940. Camouage consist of RLM 71, 02 and 65 with heavy moling on fuse-

  lage sides. Raven with running nose and umbrella was badge of II./JG 51 later adopted by some of unit´s Stael with dierent background

  colors. Mickey Mouse is personal emblem of Josef Fözö nave in Vienna, Austria. A pre-war pilot of Austrian Air Force Fözö joined Luwae

  in 1938 and volunteered for service in Spain where he scored three victories. At the beginning of World War 2 he was already commander

  of 4./JG 51. He downed one balloon during Sitzkrieg and two RAF ghters during „Kanalkampf“ in July. His second and third victory was

  scored on west of Cap Griz-Nez against Hurricanes of No. 56 Sq. In Bale of Britain he scored 9 victories against RAF and one more in April

  1941. Fözö was appointed commander of II./JG 51 and was heavily injured on Russian front in July 1941. He was awarded with Knight Cross

  during same month. Aer recovery in May 1942 he became commander of I./JG 51 in the East. However during same month he was heavily

  injured again. Aer lengthy recovery he took over commanding posion on operaonal training unit JG 108. His total score was 27 victories

  including service in Spain. Fözö passed away in Vienna in 1979, aged 67 years.

  DER ADLERTAG

  Major Adolf Galland was highest scoring Luwae ghter pilot in Bale of Britain. In period between August 8th and October 31st, 1940

  he scored 32 victories including 15 Spiires. Aer service in Legion Condor, 4.(S)/LG 2 and JG 27 he became commander of III./JG 26 on

  June 11th, 1940. This unit was second ranking Jagdgruppe in Bale of Britain with 105 victories. His last victories (19. - 22.) with III./JG 26

  were scored on August 15th. He claimed Spiire possibly own by RAF ace F/Lt A.C. Deere of No. 54 Sq. and later on added two Spiires

  of No. 64 Sq. Galland´s Messerschmi is painted with RLM 02 with RLM 71 moling on upper surfaces and RLM 65 undersides. On August

  22nd Galland became Kommodore of JG 26 „Schlageter“. Later in the war he took posion of General der Jagdieger and became youngest

  Luwae General. He did not get along with Göring very well and lost his posion in 1944. In last months of war he was allowed to organize

  elite Jagdverband 44 equipped with Me 262 jet ghters. Adolf Galland achieved 104 aerial victories in 705 missions, all on the Western front.

  Included in his score are at least seven victories ying the Me 262 and four four-engined bombers. He was himself shot down four mes.

  Aer the war he took part in modernizaon of Argenne Air Force and was acve in German ghter pilot associaon. He also became one

  of advisers during shoong of Bale of Britain movie. His fellow adviser RAF ace Robert S. Tuck became his very close friend and godfather

  of his son.

  DER ADLERTAG

  A later marking version of Galland´s machine with yellow idencaon markings introduced by Luwae command at the beginning of

  August 1940. Some authors believe that this is machine WNr. 4820 own by Galland in August 1940 as a last personal mount during his com-

  mand of III./JG 26. The 4820 was manufactured by Arado in July 1940 as E-1/B. Galland´s logbook states E-1 version, but photographs show

  is equipped with cannons in the wing. There is another machine of Galland from this period also aributed to WNr. 4820. But also

  in this case, his „Emil“ is equipped with cannons in the wings and earlier canopy.

  Fw. Arnold was shot down on August 30th late aernoon during freelance mission over England. I./JG 27 formaon was surprised by RAF

  ghters. Arnold´s „Emil“ was hit in radiator, possibly by F/O B.J.G. Carbury of No. 603 Squadron. He performed landing at Westwood Court,

  near Faversham, Kent. Aircra was placed on display in Exeter for fundraising. German ghters did not claim any victory in this combat, but

  two of his colleagues were shot down as well. One was captured and the second one ditched in the Channel without injury to be rescued

  later on. Camouage consist of RLM 71, 02 and 65. Africa emblem of I./JG 27 was introduced in late spring 1940 as reminder of German

  African colonies lost aer Great War. The scissors (in German language: Schere) and „r“ are play on the name of former Schwarmführer

  within the 3. Stael popular Lt. Ulrich Scherer. He is missing aer combat with Hurricanes of No. 615 Sq. on July 20th near Cherbourg. Unit

  lost Gruppenkommandeur Hptm. Helmut Riegel in same combat. Staelkapitän of 3./JG 27 was future Knight Cross winner Oblt. Gerhard

  Homuth who later successfully led I./JG 27 in Africa. Homuth scored 15 victories during 1940 and his nal score was 63 in 450 missions. Aer

  recovery from disease in early 1943 he became Luwae delegaon based at Soa in Bulgaria as an instructor training Bulgarian ghter

  pilots. In late July he was appointed commander of I./JG 54 on Eastern front. On August 2nd, 1943, Homuth was engaged in a 20 minutes

  dogght with Russian ghters and remains missing.

  DER BLITZ

  This Messerschmi saw very long career, being manufactured by company Arado in late summer or early autumn 1939. Its camouage con-

  sist of RLM 71, 02 and 65 and probably went through several changes. It can not be excluded that it was produced in scheme RLM 70/71 on

  upper surfaces. Probably due to error, JG 52 kept this machine in books as E-4. Red cat emblem was introduced as unit badge already in 1939

  when the Stael carried designaon 1./JG 71. Erich Mummert was shot down with this „Emil“ on September 30th aernoon during bomber

  escort mission. Six JG 52 ghters were aacked by Spiires and tried to form a defensive circle. Germans were low on fuel and soon had to

  abandon the combat. Being pursued by Spiires the combat got slightly confused for Germans and Mummert was hit in radiator by another

  Bf 109! He performed wheels-up landing on the edge of Detling aireld. Another II./JG 52 pilot was also shot down and bailed out, being

  captured also near Detling. Commander of 4./JG 52 was legendary Johannes Steinho who ended war as Kommodore of Me 262 equipped

  Jagdgeschwader 7 and later joined Adolf Galland and his elite Jagdverband 44. He was credited with 178 victories in almost 1,000 missions

  being awarded with Knight Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. His career aer World War 2 peaked with posion of Chairman of the NATO

  Military Commiee (1971–1974). Steinho achieved his h victory, a Spiire near Dorking, on September 30th around noon. Another

  Spiire claim of II./JG 52 on September 30th was submied by Oblt. Werner Gutowski for his rst victory - in late aernoon northwest of

  London. Aer service with JG 1, JG 11 and JG 77 Gutowski became member of Adolf Galland´s sta at General der Jagdieger oce. At the

  end of war he also became member of Jagdverband 44.

  DER BLITZ

  This Bf 109 E-4 was produced by WNF in May or June 1940 but at unit level it was registered as E-1. It carries white markings that were

  applied by some Luloe 3 ghter units due to misunderstanding of Luwae instrucons from early August 1940. Camouage consist of

  RLM 71, 02 and 65. In late July the highly successful JG 53 got an order to delete „Pik As“ emblem from their machines and use instead

  a 30cm wide red band on engine cowling. The ocial explanaon was linked to fear that enemy could idenfy the unit during aerial bales.

  According the Kommodore Obstlt. Hans-Jürgen von Cramon the real reason was constant bullying of his person by Luwae command

  because of Jewish origin of his wife. Quite a few pilots of JG 53 decided to overspray swaskas on their planes in summer 1940. Wilhelm

  Meyerweissog was born in 1889 and served in military during Great War. Aer the war it is assumed he lived in Switzerland and oen

  travelled to USA as businessman. In JG 53 „Pik As“ he was acng as an administrave ocer of Geschwaderstab. His machine was also

  photographed during refueling at captured Brish airbase La Villiaze, Guernsey, Channel Islands. He was captured on September 5th, 1940.

  During interrogaon he said: „saw the boys going o and thought he would like a ip too. He jumped into his aircra, ew vaguely in the

  direcon of England and was neatly shot through the petrol tank by a Brish ghter“, probably by F/Lt. P.C. Hughes with Spiire of No. 234

  Sq. Hptm. Meyerweissog made a forced landing at Monkton farm near St. Nicholas –at-Wade at 15.45 hrs, “from which more by luck than

  good judgement he came out safely and, when apprehended, had not the slightest idea where he was”. To further quote the interrogaon

  report, his start and mission were described as a ´Very freelance patrol´, and his morale as ´Good under trying circumstances´.

  Troha´s plane was manufactured by WNF in autumn 1939 as Bf 109 E-3. In 1940 it was not upgraded only with new canopy but probably also

  with new MG FF/M cannons, so unit kept the airplane in records as E-4. The sea horse emblem was created by original core of unit´s pilots

  who were supposed to form ghter squadron of German aircra carrier Graf Zeppelin. Camouage consist of RLM 71, 02 and 65. Egon Troha

  was born in Austria in 1916 and aer pilot and ghter training started to serve in JG 26 in 1939. Later on he joined JG 27 before being nally

  assigned to III./JG 3. Troha scored ve victories during 1940 including one Dutch Fokker C.V and on October 1st he became commander

  of 9./JG 3. His last kill, probably a Hurricane of No. 605 Sq., was scored on October 26th shortly aer noon west of Boulogne. On October

  29th during mission over England Oblt. Troha was aacked by Spiires of No. 74 Sq. He believed his wingman is covering him, but instead

  received a radiator damage. He force-landed near Shepherdswell. During interrogaon Troha maintained this was not his personal aircra

  and did not want to disclose identy of the pilot. There was good reason for it, the original pilot was Troha´s friend and ve victory Austrian

  ace Lt. Franz Achleitner captured on August 24th. In Canada Troha lost an eye in riot and was repatriated. Aer return to Germany he was

  promoted to Hauptmann and served with operaonal training unit JG 108 ll the end of war.

  This „Emil“ was manufactured by company Arado as E-1/B or E-8 version in September 1940. At unit level the armament was changed to

  two cannons in the wing, but earlier type of canopy was not changed. Aer the upgrade this Bf 109 was kept in unit records under E-4

  designaon. Camouage consist of RLM 71, 02 and 65. It was personal mount of Stab II./JG 54 ocer Lt. Bernhard Malischewski who served

  with the unit already under its original designaon I./JG 76. He scored one victory during Sitzkrieg and three more in French campaign and

  Bale of Britain. The last one occurred on September 29th, when he shot down a Spiire near London, while his boss Gruppenkommandeur

  Dietrich Hrabak claimed a Hurricane. Hrabak later became Kommodore of famous JG 52 and JG 54 on Eastern Front, claimed 125 victories in

  over 1,000 missions and was awarded with Knight Cross with Oak Leaves. Malischewski was captured on October 12th aer forced landing

  south of Tenterden, Kent. It is believed that his victor was S/Ldr R.S. Tuck, however Malischewski said he suered engine failure during dog

  ght. Indeed his airplane did not have any hits from enemy re. In UK he was kept as prisoner of war at Camp 13, the Hayes Camp, in Swa-

  nwick, Derbyshire. He joined to group of prisoner, including Franz von Werra, who were planning escape through a tunnel. They nicknamed

  themselves as „Swanwick Tieau A. G.“ (Swanwick Construcon Company). Three prisoners including von Werra escaped, but Malischewski

  gave up the eort earlier during digging process. In February 1945 he was sentenced to 28 days detenon for aempng to escape from the

  train bringing him from one Canadian camp to another. He was promoted in capvity to rank of Oberleutnant and passed away in 1975.

  This airplane was manufactured by Messerschmi GmbH in late summer 1940. It carried camouage of RLM 71 and 02 on upper surfaces.

  Stael emblem with Puss in Boots (Gesefelter Kater) with lantern was used from 1938 ll 1942. The black triangle is marking of ground

  aack aircra, the „M“ is individual marking of aircra within Stael and yellow color is aributed to 6. Stael. Commander of the 6.(S)/LG

  2 was Oblt. Werner Dörnbrack. He ew as ground aack pilot in acve duty from 1938 ll end of war. In 1,118 missions with Hs 123, Bf 109

  and Fw 190 he shot down 29 aircra and destroyed number of ground targets. He was nal posion was Kommodore of Schlachtgeschwa-

  der 4 awarded with Knight Cross with Oak Leaves. Aer capture by US forces he was handed over to Red Army but escaped aer two days.

  The Bf 109 E-4 WNr. 3726 was lost on October 5th, 1940 with Fw. Erhardt Pankratz at the controls. He was ying near English coast at a hei-

  ght 12,000 feet when he was aacked by No. 603 Sq. Spiires. Both of his petrol tanks were hit, he tried to return to France, but his engine

  seized. He performed successful forced landing near Peasmarsh, Sussex. A steel helmet was found during examinaon of the Bf 109. This

  airplane was shown to Brish public later on.

  The high altude ghter camouage scheme adorned this Spiire as well. In accordance with regulaons, red-blue cockades were painted on

  the fuselage and upper sides of the wings. No naonal insignia was applied on the boom of the wings. A photo of this aircra shows that the

  GZ code leers did not adhere to regulaons on the right side of the fuselage. The aircra was equipped with extended wingps.
