EDITORIALThe inaugural Novemberfest event is behind us,and all of us here survived the hectic Saturdayin more or less good health. We tried to shoeall of our visitors as precisely as possible theday to day operations of what we do. Due tothe complexities involved, and the branching outof our operation, this was not as easy a feat asit may appear from the outside. Judging fromthe reaction of the participants, it would appearthat the desired level of comprehension was the-re. The complete report is in this newsletter, andif you feel you would like to become more fa-miliar with our company, you will certainly bewelcome next year.November saw the rst anniversary of thelaunch of the Bunny Fighter Club. For the rsthalf of next year, we are preparing a new clubentry kit, a 1/72nd scale MiG-15bis, and alsoa new set of club offers. We nished the inten-sive mold preparations for the MiG-15 in No-vember.As with every preceding month, we have pre-pared a list of new items for December, someof which by their very nature deviate upwardsfrom the usual standard. This month, this holdstrue for the sets for the B-17G in 1/32nd scale.Among the new Brassin sets, there is not only onecontaining 13 machine guns, but also the engi-nes, and there could be some confusion genera-ted in terms of what each set contains. We arereleasing all four engines, each as a single set.The set designation contains the engine numberas well as their position on the wings as shownin this bulletin, or as you can see on our website.At the same time, in the BIGSIN line, SIN63202B-17G ENGINES 1/32 contains all four engines.The advantage of this package, as with otherBIGSIN and BIG ED sets is the signicant cost sa-ving over the individual sets. Unfortunately, thisdoesn’t mean that the sets become cheap. Ano-ther BIGSIN set coming out is SIN64809 SPITFIREMk.IX ADVANCED 1/48. This set contains noneof the items from SPITFIRE Mk.IX ESSENTIAL1/48. This month’s set contains a dee-per level of detail, requiring somecutting and ling. The third cu-rrent offering with a mini-mal level of complexityby comparison aretwo sets of differentJu 88 wheels; their di-vision into early andlate styles requiring nofurther comment.So as not to get toofar from complexi-ties, we also havetwo photoetched BIGED sets likewise forthe B-17G in 1/32ndscale. The contents ofthese sets are equiva-lent in depth to the kititself, and the resultingproduction and retailcosts are a bit of aninvestment. In order tomaximize the attractive-ness to the end user, thekits are broken into twoparts. Also, the price re-duction and consequentadvantage of these setsis increased over theaverage for the Big Eds.Staying with the photoe-tched offerings, I wouldalso like to draw yourattention to the sets forthe new 1/32nd scale Ju88A-4 from Revell whichdiffer surprisingly overthose offered for the A-1 version, and the rsttwo sets for the 1/48th B-29. And yes, thoseare for the good ‘ol Monogram kit. We deci-ded that this would make a good addition tothe sets of the B-17G and B-24J in the samescale from the same manufacturer that have pro-ven to be very popular bestsellers over the pastfew years. Another ve sets are being plannedfor the B-29 for January 2014. More fabricseatbelt sets are being released this month,as well, covering the 1/32nd scale P-51 andJu 88, sets for the B-25 with the gun nose version,the A-1D Skyraider and Lynx HAS.3 in the samescale, as well as sets for our own 48th scaleMiG-21R and Bf 110G-4 in 1/72. The 1/72ndscale items are also covered with sets for theSH-3D Seaking from Cyberhobby and theLancaster B.Mk.I/III. For the sailors there is co-verage of the Yamato in 1/450 scale, and twonew gure sets. I am hoping that these providea good counterbalance to all of the new attenti-on being given to 1/32.The main attraction insofar as kit releases gothis month is the fth of the MiG-21 ProPACKline, this time the dedicated photo reconnai-ssance versiion, the MiG-21R. The kit includesa new wing, and the kit offers three versionsof the recce pod, and a list of other detailsfound specically on this version. As usual, thereare ve marking options for this kit, mostly cove-ring camouaged aircraft and this is one of themost colorful aircraft in the MiG-21 line. I expectthat at some point I will be getting a lot of mailabout the need for a UM version, but for now, theR will need to sufce! In the Limited Edition line,the second, and for now nal, version of the1/48th scale P-47D is being released under thename ‘Jugs over Italy’, and the kit again con-sists of Academy plastic, resin and brass fromEduard and decals from Cartograf covering veThunderbolts operating over Italy. My roundupfor the month ends with the Weekend kit of theBf 110G-4 in 1/72nd scale. IX ADVANCED 1/48 EduardThe 12.7mm (0.5in) machine gun develo-ped by John M. Browning rst saw the lightof day in October, 1918. The concept wasdeveloped from the older Browning 0.3inM1917. The requirement for an automaticweapon of a minimum 0.5in caliber and amuzzle velocity of 820m/s (2,700ft/sec)came from the commanding ofcer of theAmerican Expeditionary Force in Europe,General John J. Pershing. It should come asno surprise that one of the reasons for therequirement was the entering into service ofthe German all-metal Junkers J1 aircraft,against which weapons in service were ina-dequate. Even so, the spec was not that ofan aerial weapon, and as far as the Ameri-can side was concerned, there was no planto install such a weapon into an aircraft.eduard25INFO Eduard - December 2013Page 26
HISTORY1918 – 1933The rst tests of the new machine gun werebasically disappointing. The muzzle velocitydid not exceed 700m/s (2300ft/sec) andthe rate of re was below 500 rounds perminute. A source of optimism for dealingwith these shortcomings was new ammuniti-on being developed by Winchester.The next development achieved a muzzlevelocity of 840m/s (2750ft/sec), satisfyingthe original specication. This result was notachieved, however, until after the war. Con-tinued development by John Browning andFred T. Moore brought about, after a fewyears, the water cooled M1921 machinegun. There was also a light weight aerialversion of which there were serious doubtsabout its practical uses.After the death of J.M. Browning in 1926,further development continued through theresearch of Dr. S.H. Green. The result wasthe initiation of production of a machinegun with Colt in 1933. At that time, the de-signation M2 was used, and a version wasdeveloped with air cooling replacing thewater tank, using the perforated sleeve co-vering the barrel, giving the weapon its dis-tinctive look. The barrel itself gained muchin terms of strength, and to the designationwas added HB (Heavy Barrel).THE GOLDEN ERA OF THE M2Mass use of the M2 machine gun cameabout during the Second World War whenvirtually all USAAF and USN ghter andbomber aircraft, as well as huge numbersof Army and Marine ground vehicles, wereequipped with them. It should also be notedthat many allied armies used the weapon aswell. The basis of the success of the machinegun came with the simple construction andease of maintenance, the option of loadingthe weapon from the left or the right side,and high reliability.For aerial use, a variant with a lightenedbarrel designated AN/M2 was used asa xed weapon such as those used in thefuselage and wings of ghter and attackaircraft such as the P-51, P-38, P-47, B-25etc.), or as a exible weapon or one moun-ted in turrets in types such as the B-17,B-24, B-25, B-29 among others. Due to highwar time demand, license production wasinitiated also at Frigidaire.Loading of the weapon could be manualwith the use of levers or electrical. Belt feedwas then done mechanically with help ofelectrical feeders if needed.After the Second World War, the M2 ma-chine gun spread its form of diplomacythrough Korea, Vietnam and through to thecurrent wars. The virtually unchanged con-cept of the gun under the same designationis still in use today. Those who used the gun to attacktrains recalled that the it was useful in ri-pping up the tracks.Current rounds for the M2HB also includesthe anti-armor projectile M903 SLAP, capa-ble of penetrating 34mm (1.34in) at 500m(547yds).eduard29INFO Eduard - December 2013Page 30
HISTORYThe Browning M2 in the B-17GThe main aim of this article is to provide bac-kground for the Brassin set of M2 MachineGuns for the B-17G in 1/32nd scale. The in-stallation of 12 to 13 of these weapons in theB-17 made the aircraft one of the best armedbombers of the war and it was these machineguns that served to make it known as the ‘Fly-ing Fortress’.The most important defensive weapon positionin the B-17G, as indicated by statistics concer-ning kills and protection of the aircraft, arethe upper and rear positions. Both were equi-pped with hand held M2 machine guns (theupper turret (or top turret) was a combinedaffair - turning the weapon out to the sidesensured the rotation of the turret). The signi-cant G series characteristic was the additionof the chin turret operated by the bombar-dier. It was equipped with twin guns. The nalturret was a ball turret located below the air-craft that was equipped with twin xed guns,and these were aimed by aiming the entireturret. In addition to the turrets there were se-veral other gun positions. First and foremostof these were the waist gun positions (HKM’skit and also the Brassin set from Eduard re-present the latest variation, and in the caseof the G model, the most widely used) Otherpositions were operated by the navigator(cheek), and one by the radio operator thatcame up through a glass cover in the ceilingof the aircraft. This gun was often removed bythe summer of 1944. Depending on the actualposition, the weapons could be operated byhand or electrically and the belt feed couldbe from the left or the right.
