  Ladies and Gentlemen,

  Every month has its own dominant featu-

  re…a sort of given. Some of these monthly

  aspects are seasonal, and they repeat, year

  aer year. For example, July gets hot. Some

  aspects are more variable, and change from

  one year to the next. This year, the dominant

  aspect has been, obviously, the increasing-

  ly annoying coronavirus, and no less intense

  have been the demonstraons against global

  racism that have been thrown into the mix

  of insanity that this year has bestowed upon

  us. We are halfway through the year, and at

  the moment, my impression is that my inial

  opmism for what the year would bring was

  way o the mark. In all honesty, I can say that

  a year like this, lled with dumb ideas and no-

  ons that have been taken to such extremes,

  has not come around in a very long me. The

  only thing to do is to hope that the second half

  of the year will see a turnaround and things

  will stabilize. Truth be told, that is beginning

  to look unlikely. But, things will improve!

  If not this year, then the new year will bring

  a chance of something beer. But, not to com-

  plain too much about how strange this year

  is, from a sales point of view, this is not a bad

  year at all. It is clear that modellers have not

  given up on their passion due to the epidemic.

  The result is that our producon and retail de-

  partments are just barely keeping up with de-

  mand, and are running at full capacity. Among

  other things, it tells me that the idea of new

  project development is a good one. This is

  clearly illustrated by the fact that even our

  lile Kunkadlo, which I inially had absolutely

  no intenon of boxing as a regular kit, sold out

  during the rst month aer release. Fieen

  hundred pieces! What’s the big deal? We sold

  a lot more Focke-Wulfs and MiGs. Yes, that’s

  true, but these are types that were own in

  their thousands, with some very aracve

  camouage schemes, and are aircra that

  are generally very well known. But, who knew

  what a Kunkadlo was unl now? Who knew

  what it was a year ago, or even six months

  ago? Aer all, it was a semi-amateurish de-

  sign of an ultra-light with a 14hp engine that,

  incidentally, was less powerful than my wife’s

  scooter. Furthermore, it was produced to the

  tune of one piece. For us, it was a test, a tech-

  nological demonstrator, a research project

  that served as vericaon of new technology,

  and, thanks to which, we ended up rejecng,

  but which led to further tesng of possible

  variaons on the theme. I asked modellers,

  especially foreign ones, what had led to their

  purchase of this kit. The most common an-

  swer was along the lines of “because it exists,

  and I can. It’s a nice model of a nice airplane”.

  That pleases me very much. I see it as a bit of

  an achievement. To successfully put through

  something like this, in a saturated industry, is

  no small feat. As a side note, it should be no-

  ted that the 1500 kits of the Kunkadlo sold as

  quickly as the 2200 ‚Wine, Women and Song‘

  Marauder kits.

  This year’s IPMS USA Naonal Convenon

  followed down the same road as many events,

  and was cancelled. If all goes well, we can ex-

  pect to be in San Marcos in 2023. Although

  the cancellaon is regreable, as are all of the

  cancellaons of these events, I do think that

  the decision is the correct one due to the cri-

  cal situaon brought on by the epidemic. Our

  plan was, should the Naonals go ahead and

  we had a way of actually geng there, to be

  in aendance, though with a minimal conn-

  gent of two. In and out, no trips around this

  year. I wasn’t even really looking forward to it.

  It would have been dicult, because almost

  no airline from here is ying there yet. And

  when there is a ight, they seem to have no

  idea what they should be charging for it. They

  wouldn’t even let us in the country, and if they

  did, they would sck us in quaranne. And

  then, we could expect the same stu on the

  return trip. I am of the old school. I am used

  to complicaons, dealing with and overco-

  ming them, but everything has its limit. I am

  probably not the only one who sees it this

  way. So, I wish all modellers and modelling

  companies in the States good luck for next

  year in Vegas! I am really looking forward to it!

  Of course, I am absolutely looking forward to

  our own E-day much more. It’s a lot closer, and

  I sincerely hope that that stupid lile bug do-

  esn’t throw a monkey wrench into that idea,

  too. The loss of this year’s IPMS Naonals is

  all the more a shame, given that we prepared

  a collecon of interesng and aracve new

  items for July, and especially August. Just the

  two main new items for August, the Limited

  Edion ‚VLR: Tales of Iwo Jima‘ and ‚Spiire

  Story: The Few‘, are gorgeous items. ‚VLR‘, or

  ‚Very Long Range‘, is prey self explanatory,

  involving the history of the Mustang based on

  Iwo Jima. These were tasked with escorng

  long-range B-29 bombers to Japan and back,

  and it is a well documented account. It is a co-

  lourful account, involving some very colourful

  Mustangs. Our goal was clear: bring to Ame-

  rica a very American themed plasc kit. And

  to add to it a fresh new item, along the lines

  of last year’s ‚Chaanooga Choo Choo‘, that is

  a Limited Edion introducon in our style of

  kits. This me around, it was to be the Spiire

  Mk.I. Inially, I had some reservaons about

  the potenal of ‚Spiire Story‘, but it became

  clear during the development of this concept,

  that it had even greater potenal than ‚VLR‘.

  Well, it is, aer all, the Bale of Britain. That is

  the subject maer that Spiire concerns itself

  with to a very high degree, together with the

  Bale of France and Operaon Dynamo, and is

  one of the most riveng periods in the human

  history. I was quite surprised myself, admied-

  ly, by the depth of the stories and experien-

  ces of people and units involved, that came

  to light during the development of this kit.

  Some people consider the Spiire Mk.I a bo-

  ring subject maer, at least to some extent, al-

  ways green and brown, no artwork…well, you

  will see. You will get more informaon about

  these two Limited Edion releases, as well as

  all the others for the month as well, further

  down in this newsleer. Also, from about the

  mid point of July, there will be more revealed

  on our Facebook page, and elsewhere.

  At the end of July, we are planning an intro-

  ducon to our August releases, in cooperaon

  with Artur Model Centrum. It won’t be held

  specically at the outlet venue this me, as

  it was in February, but we are moving to the

  comfortable sengs of the nearby Italian re-

  staurant. The event will be held on July 24th,

  from 5:00pm at the aforemenoned Il Primo

  Piao restaurant, immediately next door to

  the Artur Model Centrum retail outlet. It’s

  not far at all from the retail outlet of Artur

  MC, really, just a hop, skip and a jump away,

  but the restaurant is very well suited to hold

  such an event. The main aracon will be

  the introducon of new releases for August,

  with emphasis on the two Limited Edion kits

  described earlier, and this will include a short

  historical excursion into the themes of the two

  items. We will also discuss decals. This will

  include discussions on decals included in kits,

  and also aermarket decal sets. Over the past

  few months, we have quietly increased our re-

  lease acvity of aermarket decal sets under

  the label of Eduard Decals. Besides the release

  of sheets containing naonal markings, stencil

  data, Lozenge paerns, and the like, we have

  begun to release sheets in the classic paern,

  covering dierent schemes for specic types

  of aircra. There are two categories of models

  for which these are designed. The rst are in-

  teresng sets for kits produced by other than

  ourselves, usually new items on the market.

  This includes a set of decals for the P-38F/G

  in 1:48th scale released in June, designed for

  the Tamiya kit, and two sheets for the Mi-24V

  being prepared for September. The second

  line of these sets will be designed for our own

  kits, especially for newly released Weekend

  kits. The choices that are going to be oered

  for these will cover schemes that did not t

  into released Eduard kit, usually a Weekend

  edion kit, aer the inial determinaons

  were made. In some cases, they may cover

  subjects that are at the moment not availa-

  ble in kit form in our catalog, such as sold out

  I bought myself a scooter with an output of

  11kW. That’s more than the engine in Kunkadlo.

  Limited Edion kits or ProPACKS, as was the

  case of the Spiire Mk.VIII sheet released last

  month. We are also preparing sheets for the

  F6F-3 in 1:48th scale along these lines, and for

  the Bf 108 in 1:32nd. With these, we will also

  be releasing sheets covering stencil data and

  naonal markings. The combinaon of these

  three sheet concepts should ensure excellent

  coverage of schemes for the released kits. We

  will also be introducing a small technological

  improvement, that will apply a slightly thicker

  carrier lm on the sheets starng with August

  releases. This should eliminate any discomfort

  in the applicaon of our decals. The discu-

  ssions within the introducon of these pro-

  ducts will also focus on the versality of these

  decals.

  The nal block will be dedicated to new pro-

  ducts. It will be a short presentaon outlining

  new items for September and October, and

  something about E-day. There will also be the

  introducon of a newly developed product,

  spaal decals intended, rst and foremost, for

  aircra interiors. They can be considered as

  alternaves to photoetched brass parts. This

  line will be called Eduard SPACE and Eduard

  SPACE PLUS. SPACE will only be a decal set,

  typically of the instrument panel, sidewalls

  and panels, and seatbelts. SPACE PLUS will

  have the addion of photoetched seatbelts

  (Steelbelts style probably), perhaps a mask,

  and maybe even some resin. I am impressed

  with this new product. There is sll a lile bit

  of ne tuning to be done, but I think they will

  appear on the market in a mely manner.

  In terms of new releases for July, we have

  a small faux pas to report at this me. We ma-

  naged somehow to pack the P-47D Razorback

  plasc into the P-47D Bubbletop boxes in the

  SUPER44 series of 1:144th scale kits. This was

  done even before July began, and a few hun-

  dred of these went out to retailers and distri-

  butors before the mistake was discovered. We

  came across the error only about two days

  aer the kits went out, but that is of lile con-

  solaon, I know. It’s not a lot of kits, but you

  know how it goes. They’re out there now, and

  not much can be done. They’re a lile like coc-

  kroaches that way. We are trading these for

  the correctly packaged items, and are doing

  what we can to stop the improperly packaged

  ones from geng from the retailers to the

  end users, but we have already received some

  requests for an exchange. If this lile mishap

  should concern you, please accept my apolo-

  gy. These things do happen!

  The new above noted August Limited Edi-

  on releases are not the rst theme based items

  with a disnct storyline in our catalog. In truth,

  we have been doing these sorts of things for

  a long me, and they are in a constant evolu-

  on and in a process of being perfected. Kits

  like ‘Wine, Women and Song’, and ‘Desert

  Babe’, can be added to this category easily.

  Probably the epitome of the idea was reached

  with the recent ‘Du docht nicht!!’, dedicated

  to the aircra of Ernst Udet. The August re-

  lease of the ‚Spiire Story‘ pushes this con-

  cept even a lile further, and is closer to per-

  fecon sll, as dened by the concept. In July,

  we are releasing another Limited Edion item

  that ows along these lines. This is dubbed

  WILDE SAU Episode One: RING of FIRE. It is in

  1:48th scale, and is likewise dedicated to the

  theme of world aviaon history. The theme

  is aircra own by the German Luwae in

  the night ghng role by Wilde Sau units JG

  300, JG 301 and JG 302. Because this is such

  a widely encompassing theme, covering

  a large number of aircra types, we have de-

  cided to spread it over three volumes, or epi-

  sodes. The rst is today’s WILDE SAU Episode

  One: RING of FIRE. It is dedicated to the servi-

  ce of the Bf 109G-6 used by the aforemeno-

  ned units. The kit is of the Dual Combo type

  comprising two models, and oers ten mar-

  king opons. The item also includes some bo-

  nuses, as is normal in these. The second volu-

  me of this trilogy kit will be called WILDE SAU

  Episode Two: The GHOST HUNTERS, and will

  be dedicated to the Bf 109G-14/AS and G-10,

  while the nal installment of the series will be

  called WILDE SAU Episode Three: The FINAL

  COUNTDOWN. The laer will be dedicated

  to various versions of the Fw 190. The three

  volumes will be released with about a year’s

  interval. More details about the contents can

  be found in today’s newsleer. I think that you

  will be as impressed as I was, and I think that

  this set is desned for best seller status. Don’t

  hesitate in the purchase of these, as they will

  only be released to the tune of 3,000 pieces,

  and will not be repeated. One of the interes-

  ng things related to WILDE SAU Episode One

  kit is that we will be releasing two associated

  separate decal sheets in August for them, in

  the Eduard Decal line, to cover opons that

  would’ve been nice to include in the box itself,

  but there were simply too many of them.

  In the ProPACK line, in 1:48th scale, we

  will be revising an older World War One kit,

  the Morane Saulnier Type N. The molds are

  admiedly some twenty years old now, but

  they have held up well, and the kit is a qua-

  lity kit. They were part of a later group of kits

  that enjoyed more modern and ecient pro-

  ducon methods. I believe they will impress

  a new and younger audience. In the Weekend

  line, in 1:48th scale, there will be an F6F-3

  Hellcat, and it will have an associated release

  of a dedicated separate decal sheet in the

  Eduard Decal line. I have already menoned

  the P-47D Bubbletop in the SUPER44 line. This

  kit is being rescheduled from May due to the

  packing error. A somewhat adventurous set of

  circumstances surrounding the delivery from

  Japan have had their impact on the described

  packaging issue, but I do not want to use that

  as an excuse. For similar reasons, though, the

  release of the 1:72nd L-29 Deln (ProPACK)

  has been moved to August.

  The accessory items that are being released

  for July are very heavily dependent on the

  new Zvezda Mi-24V in 1:48th. The kit itself

  got a lot of what-for on the internet forums,

  with most of the gripes being levied against

  a lack of interior detail and surface scribing.

  I don’t quite understand it. It’s the same pe-

  ople who rip into Zvezda for the so surface

  textures that praise another kit’s surface

  for being as smooth as a baby’s boom. So,

  I hope that someme soon, there will be

  a convenon somewhere, and maybe someo-

  ne will be able to explain this to me. Even we

  are nding out that the surface details on our

  models are redundant or unnecessary, and

  that this especially applies to the raised rivets

  that are on our Spiire. But, if we didn’t treat

  the surfaces like we do, then we’d end up ge-

  ng a second one ripped into us like Zvezda.

  Man, it would be good to know how to please

  everyone.

  Even so, we are dedicang a lot of eort to-

  wards the new Mi-24. We have some eleven

  sets ready for it in July in the dierent lines.

  There are two mask sets, including the TF type

  which is quite useful for this kit, given the coc-

  kpit layout, and in the Brassin line we have

  a LooK set as well some wheels, we have inte-

  rior and exterior sets in the photoetched line,

  seatbelts, and other ne lile items. Other

  sets, rst and foremost in the Brassin line,

  are being prepared for the upcoming months,

  some weapon sets will be made available in

  August, and then we will get into some more

  involved projects for it. Besides the Brassin

  sets, we are also looking at a couple of decal

  sheets. One will cover Czech aircra, and the

  other foreign ones. The Hind is also the sub-

  ject for the newly developed SPACE 3D decals,

  and a conversion set is being developed for

  the Mi-24D. We are also considering a Limited

  Edion Mi-24 boxing, which we could have for

  release at E-day in 2021 or 2022.

  Another very signicant item in the Brassin

  line is the long awaited engine set for the

  P-51D in 1:48th, designed for our own Eduard

  kit. It’s not as much an accessory or detail set

  as it is a model unto itself. There are other

  items of interest in the Brassin line, such as

  the B-61 nuclear weapon, and other weapon

  sets, including those in the Big Sin line with

  seven sets for the Tornado GR.1/4 (Eduard/

  Revel). They include, rstly, another LookPlus,

  for the Bf 109G-6 and Ki-61 from tamiya, and

  a LooK set for the early version of the MiG-

  -21MF from Eduard and the above menoned

  Mi-24, all, naturally, in 1:48th scale. Also inte-

  resng are the exhaust nozzles for the F-14D

  (1:48th) and, as another example, the B-26

  wheels. These have a dierent tread paern

  than that found in Wine, Women and Song.

  Turning to photoetched, I would like to bring

  your aenon to the newly re- released and

  lightly enhanced sets for the Hurricane Mk.I

  and the Spiire Mk.I from Airx, the sets for

  the Dragon Bf 110D, and the Accurate Mi-

  niatures SBD-, under the Academy label. In

  1:32nd scale, we have sets covering the PT-17

  Kaydet from Roden, and on oer are three

  sets in 1:35th: the M16 (AFV Club), SU 122

  from Zvezda, and the Grant Mk.II from Mini-

  Art. For the ship people amongst you, we have

  a set for the HMS Dreadnaught 1915, which

  has garnered a lot of praise on its release. The-

  re are also six BigEds being released.

  A nave of Paris, Jean Chaput joined the army in 1913 at the age of twenty. At rst, he served as a infantryman and to the Air Force transfe-

  rred in 1914. Inially, he ew with Escadrille 28, where he would aain his rst kill, when he forced down a Fokker Eindecker on June 12th,

  1915. He was wounded three days later, and aer recuperang, he returned to acve duty in January 1916, this me with Escadrille N 31,

  armed with a mix of Nieuport and Morane Saulnier aircra. Over the course of the war, he would be seriously wounded several more mes

  and he claimed a total of sixteen victories. His life ended in May 1918, while in the cockpit of a SPAD XIII, was shot down by Hermann Becker

  of Jasta 12, near Montdidier.

  During 1942 RAF bomber command had mounted several so-

  called ‘1,000 bomber’ raids and by the spring of 1943 some 65

  RAF bomber squadrons stood ready to be deployed in a massive

  night-time oensive against the Reich. German night ghter

  defences – essentially radar-guided twin-engine machines

  operating in individual ‘boxes’ – risked being overwhelmed, as

  indeed they were on 24 July 1943, during a huge raid against

  the port city of Hamburg. That night, ‘Window’ – tin foil strips

  that jammed German radars – was deployed for the rst time.

  The resulting restorm, which caused huge loss of civilian life

  and damage to industrial installations, prompted the German

  High Command to give greater urgency to proposals then being

  tested to attack the bombers ‘visually’ – independently of radar-

  guidance - with single engine ghters. Decorated bomber pilot

  Oberst Hajo Herrmann had come up with this somewhat ‘hare-

  brained’ scheme during early 1943 as a means of making up for

  a general shortage of night ghters. He had suggested that single

  seat ghters could operate in the bombers’ general target area

  using the light of target indicators, massed searchlights and the

  res on the ground to spot their targets. In an eort to persuade

  his commanders of the feasibility of his idea, Herrmann had

  himself taken to ying a Focke Wulf 190 at night against RAF

  intruders as he related in his memoir ‘Bewegtes Leben’ and

  a Versuchseinheit or test unit was quickly established.

  Herrmann’s Bonn-Hangelar-based unit was crewed by

  experienced ‘blind yers’, former bomber and Lufthansa

  transport pilots. Their rst interception of a British heavy

  bomber raid had taken place on the night of 3-4 July during

  an attack on Cologne. Herrmann’s pilots destroyed at least

  ten of the twelve bombers shot down, including one brought

  down by Herrmann himself, for the loss of just one machine. As

  a result of the British deployment of ‘Window’ over Hamburg,

  Herrmann’s pilots suddenly found themselves centre stage

  as the only real interim counter measure available to the

  Luftwae, while German radar research technology strove to

  overcome the jamming.

  Herrmann’s pilots quickly became specialists in night-time

  ‘free hunting’ - otherwise dubbed ‘wilde Sau’ or ‘wild boar’

  night ghting. The G-5 and G-6 Gustavs employed were of

  course ‘pure’ day-ghters with no technical provision for

  operating at night whatsoever. A range of modications proved

  necessary as wilde Sau sorties were highly specialized and were

  own under ‘extreme’ conditions (ie total darkness). While

  pilots needed to be highly competent, sighting the bombers was

  an entirely visual skill. To preserve ‘night vision’, one of the rst

  modications was the tting of exhaust ame ‘shrouds’. So-

  called Blendschutzleiste were mounted over both sets of ejector

  stacks. Above the target, if it was on re, the silhouettes of

  enemy aircraft stood out against the luminous background, but

  violently contrasting lighting conditions – searchlight glare, ak

  bursts, smoke and cloud – could easily dazzle a pilot and cause

  spatial disorientation. In the cockpit certain instruments were

  doubled up on the ‘blind-ying’ panel due to their vulnerability

  to combat damage. A cockpit display for the reception of

  homing beacon signals transmitted from Hangelar went some

  way to facilitating extremely hazardous ‘blind’ landings and

  ‘precision’ approaches. Wing-tip navigation lights and landing

  lights (Bordscheinwerfer) were always extinguished to evade

  prowling night-ghters and minimal runway lighting was

  illuminated only very briey so that takeos and landings were

  carried out most of the time in almost total darkness. Wilde Sau

  109s of course carried the standard radio equipment package

  and were of course ‘guided’ to the city under attack by the

  FuG 16 ZY – night-time navigation was also facilitated by radio

  ‘reference’ beacons and searchlights. The radio equipment

  included the FuG 25a radio transmitter pack used for IFF to

  identify the aircraft to ground stations. Various devices tted

  to the aircraft – most notably exhaust stack ‘whistles’ (Pfeife)

  produced by Eberspächer and in some instances infra-red lights

  mounted on the lower wing surfaces - helped identify the wilde

  Sau ghters to the ak batteries on the ground. Requests for

  the ak to cease ring when the wilde Sau were operating over

  particularly ‘sensitive’ areas had been refused from the outset,

  although a cockpit-mounted are pistol ring ES (Erkennungs-

  signal) recognition ares could in theory, when red o, stop

  the ak batteries on the ground. Ordinarily the Bf 109 had a

  relatively short endurance – the Bf 109 G-5 had a maximum

  endurance of 80 minutes, of which 15 minutes were allowed for

  climbing and ight at high-power settings. The tting of a belly-

  mounted auxiliary fuel tank (300 liters) was thus a prerequisite

  for night operations, allowing for an additional hour in the air

  at cruising speed. Wilde Sau machines toted three MG 151/20

  suggested was the removal of the rubber cabin seal to achieve

  a better air ow but this resulted in too much draught. Warmer

  air from the supercharger was ducted into the cockpit in one

  technical solution.

  Quickly expanded to Gruppe strength after the success

  of their rst interceptions, JGr. Herrmann was eectively

  incorporated into II./JG 1 based in Rheine during July 1943 due

  to the continuing shortage of available aircraft. JGr. Herrmann

  was nally boosted to Geschwader strength and renamed JG

  300 in August 1943. Again this was only achieved by sharing

  aircraft - with II and III./JG 11. Mounting success led to the

  formation of two more Geschwader later that year, JG 301 and

  302, but lack of aircraft meant that only one Gruppe from each

  had its own ghters. The other Gruppen, so called Aufsitzer

  or ‘Piggy-back’ Gruppen, were forced to share the aircraft of

  day-ghter units. JG 300 and its sister units JG 301 and JG

  302 were collectively brought together as 30 Jagddivision under

  Herrmann’s command.

  cannon - two in under wing gondolas each fed by 200 rounds- and

  two MG 131 machine guns each fed by 300 rounds, harmonized

  to converge at a given distance in front of the aircraft. In an

  eort to save some weight the pilot’s head armour was usually

  removed – this also facilitated the jettisoning of the folding

  hood. Bail-outs - when they occurred – obviously resulted in the

  loss of the aircraft, it being impossible to y an emergency or

  ‘crash’ landing at night. It is worth mentioning that pilot reports

  make clear that there was usually very little defensive re from

  a bomber– especially if caught in a searchlight – since a single-

  engine ghter closing to attack had such a small silhouette and

  was rarely sighted. One particular pilot complaint appears in

  Messerschmitt reports of night-time Bf 109 operations– the

  fogging up of the cockpit cabin glazing. An interim solution

  Aer II./JG 51 was disbanded on April 5th, 1945, at Fels am Wagram, together with its pilots the

  equipment was relocated as well. One of the one-o-nines which were transferred from II./JG 51 is the

  aircra named Rosemarie. The original aircra operator can be determined thanks to the overpainted

  marking which locaon was exclusively used by II. /JG 51.

  Construction of the Kunkadlo was begun by the brothers Bohuslav and Vladimir

  Simunekin1926.Theaircraftwascompletedandownayearlater.Theinitial

  ightwasconductedbyMajorSkala,whowouldbecomeknownasamember

  ofalaterlongdistanceightfromPraguetoTokyo.Aftertherstight,the

  wing position was changed in that it was raised above the fuselage and moved

  slightly aft. Vladimir Simunek took part in several air shows with this sport plane.

  Theyingcareerofthisnoteworthyanduniqueaircraftendedin1930,when

  issues began to arise with its glued construction. The airplane was restored in

  1967, with the brothers themselves acting as advisers. After the restoration was

  complete, the aircraft was hung in the Technical Museum in Prague, where it is

  displayed to this day.
