Tail End Charlie

Business like during earthquakes

Text: Jan Bobek

In last November's issue of INFO Eduard magazine, when I wrote about the bad mood and how Russian aggression against Ukraine, inflation, energy prices rise and other factors were destabilizing our industry , I ended on a positive note, mentioning planned innovations in 3D printing, as in the production of moulds for kits and changes in our marketing, especially in relation to our magazine.

We are gradually implementing everything, but circumstances have not improved much. The Russian army is still in Ukraine and Putin, in the style of the medieval Mongol Golden Horde, doesn't care how many of his own and other people he kills. Yet our Ukrainian colleagues, competitors and business partners are holding on bravely, as is their entire country. Regarding our western neighbours in Germany, their economy is in recession for the first time in many years. This country is the largest investor in the Czech Republic and has a major influence on our own economy. What happens in Germany always has a delayed effect on us. In the first half of this year, I watched with some astonishment the statements made by some Czech journalists, politicians and senior civil servants that the crisis was over. I was sure that it was not over. In the meantime, the authors of those articles have fallen silent under the weight of statistical data. And the trouble continues, and I fear it will continue for at least a year or two.

For us, the situation on the world market is still as uncertain as it was a year ago. It is worse than during the crisis that began in 2007 and 2008. There was a drop in our sales then, but this quickly stabilised and remained more or less unchanged. Now we are facing a crisis that is caused not by one factor, but by several at the same time. The drop in sales is being felt in different parts of the world and in different countries at different times. As soon as the market stabilises in one country, it will falter in another. It is similar to an earthquake  causing aftershocks in unexpected places.

Customers of our e-shop sometimes complain about the high price of shipping. During this year, we have managed to expand our portfolio of international carriers and, at least within most European Union countries, we offer shipping at a reasonable price level. But  for shipping outside the EU, we have not yet found a more cost-effective solution from carriers operating in the Czech Republic. However we are not giving up and we are looking for a solution.

The situation is not easy even concerning the cooperation with our distributors. It is not only their caution in the first orders of new products, due to the fluctuations in consumer demand on the world market. We also have problems with the transport of goods, with the price of transport, but also with the condition in which the shipment arrives at its destination. This year, among other things, it happened to us that a carrier lost a whole pallet of boxes with our kits and accessories, to this day they still don't know where the pallet is and how they lost it. One of our North American colleagues told me that this  only happens in Europe, especially Eastern Europe. I assured him that the problem really didn't happen there. This somewhat disturbed his intercultural stereotypes. Some foreign distributors ask us to find small reliable companies that will load the goods into their truck and won't take their eyes off of them until they hand them over at their destination.  One of them even told me: “find a man with a van!”.

Here I would like to appeal to you, our customers, especially the foreign ones. Keep an eye on your local shops and distributors, and if you can, pre-order our kits and accessories from them. You'll help make this whole situation better.

In these conditions it is not easy to start working with a new partner overseas. For example in Brazil, when we got the chance, we approached the negotiations with as much openness as possible about the European logistics market condition. So the first deliveries of our items to the Brazilian company HEY HOBBY will come directly from the Czech Republic, and the transport prices in the Czech Republic and  surrounding area will decide how it will go. Anyway, I wish our new business partner every success. You will be able to meet Carlos Theodoro at the 34th GPPSD National Scale Modeling Convention, which will take place in São Paulo during 9th and 10th December 2023. He will be visiting the show on Sunday.

The way out of the current difficult situation is not only new business partners, but also innovation. We have already increased the capacity of our designers, who are preparing new kits. At the same time, we are preparing changes in our tool shop and with external partners who will help us with the production expansion. The year 2024 will bring a few surprises, fans of 1/72 scale can look forward to it, but other scales will not come short either.

As Vladimír Šulc mentions in his editorial, the planned paid-for supplement of INFO magazine will also be a benefit for our customers. The overall concept of loyalty benefits and the Bunny Fighter Club is currently under consideration, so hopefully there will as well be some nice changes in this regard in 2024.

Finally, I would like to mention one topic that concerns INFO magazine. Both for its standard issue, but especially for its coming paid-for supplement, we will have new authors from the Czech Republic and abroad. We are already publishing articles by some well-known authors and we appreciate it very much. It is our priority that an article is based on the best available sources and we don't mind  if its content differs from the knowledge we have used before in some of our kits. For example, Ed DeKiep's article on the markings of the Zeros of Tainan Kōkūtai, published in INFO Eduard magazine 10/2022, illustrates why the tail stripe on  Sakai's Zero V-128 should be done in red rather than the white we recommended in our previously released kit. In other cases, we had information sources on the subject that were unknown to the author, we provided them to him, and it was his decision how he used them. In short, we take history very seriously, both in the preparation of articles as in the preparation of kits.

Not only are we approaching authors in the area of aviation history, but we will also have new authors in the areas of land vehicles and warships. However, we will be very grateful if we hear from former and current aviators, members of the ground or shipboard staff, etc. In this regard, please contact my colleague Jan Zdiarský, who is the editor-in-chief of INFO Eduard magazine.

Good day, Dear Friends, After a three-year break, we made a return to Telford, and it was a triumphant return at that! After all, Britain is the cradle of our business, and the Telford event is the biggest exhibition in our field and it would be a mistake to miss it. Our plan is to continue attending such events, beginning with Nuremberg in January/February.

Dear Friends, I just returned from Nuremberg. I left there in a rather gloomy mood, knowing that it was most likely my last time. I have always defended the Nuremberg Fair as a useful and beneficial event. But alas, its significance to our industry has steadily declined over the years, while the costs associated with participation in it have continuously done the opposite. Still, it has always brought us some benefit, despite of the expense involved.

P-40E Warhawk

The Curtiss P-40 line of fighter aircraft stood out among American fighter types for having remained in front-line operations from the summer of 1941, before the U.S. entered World War II, through the end of the conflict four years later. Only Grumman’s versatile F4F Wildcat naval fighter could match that record.

The MW 50 System as an Alternative to the GM-1

The MW 50 System as an Alternative to the GM-1

This technical discussion supplements the article describing the GM-1 system in the Messerschmitt Bf 109 in the November, 2024 newsletter. Even before World War II, Dr. Otto Lutz (1906-1974) came up with the idea of injecting nitrous oxide into an engine to increase performance. He later published (as late as 1942) a scientific paper on the subject "Über Leistungssteigerung von Flugmotoren durch Zugabe von Sauerstoffträgern", or roughly translated, ‘On increasing the performance of aircraft engines through the addition of oxygen compounds’.

Aerial War in Ukraine - A Russian missile shot down a civilian aircraft. Again...

The battles over Ukraine often involve friendly fire incidents. Russian air defense has already destroyed numerous Russian aircraft and helicopters. Similar incidents have occurred on the Ukrainian side. Several civilian aircraft have also been hit in Russia, though without fatal consequences—until now.
