J-705, W. Nr. 163248, flown by Oblt. Hofer, Fl St 7, Sion, Switzerland, November 1945
Oblt. Hofer crash landed in J-705 on November
22nd, 1945. The cause was attributed to a fault
in the fuel system and Hofer put the plane
down with the landing gear retracted. The
aircraft was evidently repaired, since it was not
removed from the inventory of the Schweizer
Luftwaffe until September 8th, 1947.
Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6s were delivered to
Switzerland on May 20th and 23rd, 1944. They
carried the German camouflage scheme, and
in Switzerland they received their national
markings and were immediately assigned
to their intended units. The Swiss national
markings, consisting of white crosses on
red backgrounds, were supplemented in
September 1944 by red and white bands on
the wings and fuselage, a white nose and
horizontal tail surface tips. The rudder of J-705
was a replacement unit and that explains why
it carried no Swiss national marking.
