INFO Eduard
The Curtiss HS-2L originally served with the U.S. Navy for anti-submarine patrol duties. In 1919, it was sold to the Canadian company Laurentide Air Service and operated in Quebec under the name ‘La Vigilance’. In June, 1919, pilot Stuart Graham flew the aircraft on what was the first-ever reconnaissance flight over the forests of Quebec, with the objective of spotting forest fires. This flight is considered the birth of bush flying aviation in Canada.
In September, 1922, ‘La Vigilance’ was lost in a crash while landing on a lake in Northern Ontario. In 1968, the wreckage was recovered from the lake by staff from the National Aeronautical Collection and following an extensive restoration, it became the only surviving example of this aircraft in the world.
