KANADSKÉ MUZEUM LETECTVÍ A KOSMONAUTIKY
This Spitfire LF Mk.IX served initially with the Polish No.308 Squadron, and later, in 1944, with Canadian 416 Squadron. After the war, it entered service with the Royal
Netherlands Air Force and was deployed to Indonesia, then the Dutch East Indies. In the 1960s, it was purchased in Belgium by John Paterson of Fort William, Ontario,
who flew it to Canada and, in 1964, donated it to the Canadian War Museum.
Standing in front of the Spitfire is a statue of George Frederick Beurling,
a Canadian fighter ace credited with 31 confirmed kills—27 of which were
achieved during just 14 days of combat over Malta.
